1966 Mustang Fastback: A Jaw-Dropping 600HP Pro-Touring Beast

Today we have a special treat for you as we meet Andrew and his custom-built Mustang. You might remember Art, the Russian guy with the beautiful white Mustang we featured on our channel a while ago. Well, this build comes from Art, and I have a funny story to tell you about how I met him. I was searching for hot rod builders to work on either a Mustang or a Camaro. Most of the well-known builders turned me down, but then I stumbled upon this young guy working at the back of a tire shop in Los Angeles. He invited me to the shop and showed me the white Mustang he had recently built. I instantly knew he was the one for the job. This car is affectionately nicknamed the Mongrel, and in this article, we’ll dive into the details of this badass 1966 Mustang fastback Pro-Touring build.

The Mongrel Mustang

The nickname “Mongrel” suits this Mustang perfectly. It’s a combination of power, performance, and unique design elements. The car’s aggressive appearance and performance enhancements make it a standout in the hot rodding world.

Powerful Engine

To ensure top-notch performance, Andrew equipped his Mustang with a Ring Brothers front end and Detroit Speed components throughout. The Detroit Speed front cradle and rear four-link suspension provide excellent handling characteristics. Additionally, Meyer Racing fiberglass body parts add a lightweight touch while maintaining durability.

Under the hood of the Mongrel lies a stroked LS engine with 427 cubic inches of displacement. This engine delivers a mild 600 horsepower at the crank and 505 horsepower at the rear wheels. The LS engine’s dimensions and power output make it an ideal choice for this Mustang build.

Handling and Stopping Power

Andrew wanted his Mustang to handle like a true pro-touring machine, so he opted for Wilwood brakes on all four corners. The enhanced braking system ensures reliable stopping power, a must-have for spirited driving. Furthermore, the car features chassis enhancements and hidden frame ties, improving stability and overall performance.

Aggressive Exterior Styling

The Mustang’s exterior is a sight to behold. Andrew wanted to give his car an aggressive and unique look, and he achieved that by incorporating various styling elements.

First, he installed wide flares that give the Mustang a muscular and bold appearance. These flares not only enhance the car’s aggressive stance but also allow for wider wheels and tires, improving grip and stability during high-speed maneuvers.

The body of the Mustang combines both fiberglass and steel components. Meyer Racing provided the fiberglass parts, including the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and hood. The lightweight fiberglass not only reduces overall weight but also adds to the Mustang’s performance capabilities.

Andrew also added carbon fiber elements to the exterior, such as the side mirrors and rear spoiler. These carbon fiber accents not only contribute to weight reduction but also give the Mustang a sporty and high-performance aesthetic.

To complete the look, Andrew chose a set of custom wheels that perfectly complement the aggressive styling of the Mustang. The wheels have a deep-dish design and a matte black finish, adding a touch of sophistication to the overall appearance.

Interior Features

Step inside the Mongrel, and you’ll find a meticulously crafted interior that balances comfort and performance. Andrew collaborated with West Coast upholstery to create a unique and functional cabin.

The seats are upholstered in high-quality leather and Alcantara, providing both luxurious comfort and excellent grip during spirited driving. The seats feature bolstering and lumbar support, ensuring a snug and comfortable fit for the driver and passengers.

The interior incorporates metal finishes, adding a touch of modernity and sophistication. From the brushed aluminum accents on the dashboard to the stainless steel pedals, every detail has been carefully considered to create a cohesive and visually appealing interior.

Functionality was also a key consideration. The Mustang features a modern infotainment system with touchscreen navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a premium sound system. This allows Andrew to enjoy his favorite tunes while cruising down the highway or easily navigate to his destination.

Conclusion

Andrew’s custom Mustang, the Mongrel, is an automotive masterpiece. This Pro-Touring build combines aggressive styling, high-performance upgrades, a powerful engine, and a meticulously crafted interior. It’s a head-turner that commands attention with its unique design and roaring engine. Yet, it’s also a practical car for everyday enjoyment, delivering both exhilarating performance and comfortable cruising. The Mongrel embodies Andrew’s passion for creating a one-of-a-kind Mustang, showcasing the boundless creativity, skill, and dedication of hot rod builders. It’s a true testament to the art of automotive customization.
