Ford Mustang ’65 Fastback Upgraded to Pro-Touring Spec with Boss 302 Power

Pro-Touring '65 Fastback Mustang with Boss 302

If you’re a fan of classic American muscle cars, you’ll love this 1965 Mustang fastback. Originally a plain Jane car, it has been transformed into a pro-touring machine with a 2011 Boss 302 motor and upgraded suspension components.

The Beginning

The owner of the car, Sean from Autotopia LA, bought the car from a friend of his for just $5,000. The car had no engine or transmission, but it still had some paint on it. After it was sandblasted, there was almost nothing left of it.

Sean sat on the car for about a year until he came up with a plan for it. He wanted to build a pro-touring car that would be both powerful and reliable. And so the project began.

The Engine

At the core of this car lies a powerful 2011 Boss 302 motor, which was a cutting-edge engine release at the time. Sean’s enthusiasm for the project led him to be one of the first individuals to acquire this remarkable power plant. To optimize the engine’s performance, it was carefully integrated into a Detroit Speed aluminum k-member, featuring a double arm front suspension setup. This combination not only provides exceptional structural rigidity but also ensures precise handling and responsiveness, making it an ideal foundation for the potent Boss 302 motor.

To further enhance the engine’s capabilities, several upgrades were implemented. Ford Racing cams were employed to optimize valve timing and lift, maximizing power delivery across the RPM range. The addition of triangle oil pump gears enhances oil flow and reliability, crucial for high-performance applications. Detroit Speed long tube headers were chosen to optimize exhaust gas flow, reducing back pressure and enhancing engine efficiency. Finally, an upgraded intake manifold was installed to improve the engine’s breathing capacity, allowing for increased air intake and fuel delivery.

By integrating the 2011 Boss 302 motor with these carefully selected performance upgrades, Sean has created a truly formidable powertrain package. The combination of advanced engine technology, precision suspension components, and optimized intake and exhaust systems results in exhilarating performance and a thrilling driving experience. The attention to detail and the selection of high-quality components showcase Sean’s dedication to creating a well-rounded and powerful machine that is sure to impress on both the street and the track.

The result is a car that is both powerful and reliable. The engine has around 550 horsepower at the crank, but it doesn’t feel overly modified. It’s smooth, drivable, and likes to rev.

The Transmission

To handle the power of the engine, Sean chose a GT500 TR6060 six-speed transmission with a Spec clutch and aluminum flywheel. The transmission shifts smoothly all the way up to 8,000 RPM. And yes, the car can rev up to 8,000 RPM all day, every day.

The Suspension

The suspension on this Mustang is truly something special. The rear suspension is a torque arm with cantilevered shocks, which was designed by Mike Meyer. The shocks are located in the back seat, which gives the car a unique look and makes people wonder if it has independent rear suspension or a stick axle.

The front suspension is a Detroit Speed double arm setup with a cast aluminum k-member. The suspension is designed to be both stable and responsive, making the car a joy to drive.

The Wheels and Tires

The car sits on 18×11 Forgeline GZ3 wheels with 295 Yokohama A052 tires. The wheels are staggered, and the car usually runs a bit of stagger as well. The combination of the wheels and tires give the car a mean stance and plenty of grip.

The Brakes

The car is fitted with StopTech brakes, which are known for their quality and reliability. The front brakes are six-piston Trophy calipers, while the rear brakes are four-piston calipers. The brake pedal setup is from Wilwood and uses a balance bar with individual master cylinders for the front and rear brakes.

Conclusion

In the end, this Mustang is a true pro-touring machine that combines classic American muscle with modern performance and reliability. The attention to detail in the build is truly impressive, and the car is a joy to drive.
